Large-scale, multi-scale-structure oriented additive manufacturing

Additive manufacturing of large metal parts stands out for its efficiency and sustainability, but faces challenges such as a low deposition rate. The MultiscaleDED project proposes a hybrid platform integrating three Direct Energy Deposition techniques: Laser Melting Deposition (LMD), for small, detailed parts, and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) with GMAW and SAW sources, for medium-sized and large-volume parts. The solution also includes active cooling systems, intelligent slicing algorithms and online monitoring, increasing productivity and quality while reducing material waste.

Penimar is part of the consortium as co-promoter, alongside AGIX (lead promoter), POÇO, Plácido Roque, University of Coimbra, SEAPOWER and IncentAHEAD. The project runs from July 2025 to June 2028, with a total approved fund of €2,033,622.61 (71% co-financed), under COMPETE2030 (operation code COMPETE2030-FEDER-02304300).
